Statistics of Pakistan
Forest Area
Forests cover about 4.8% of Pakistan's total land area. Deforestation remains a significant issue, driven primarily by agricultural expansion and urbanization.
Biodiversity
Pakistan hosts several critical biodiversity hotspots. However, many species are under threat. The Red List Index, which measures the extinction risk of species, indicates a decline in the population of various species in Pakistan due to habitat loss and environmental degradation.
Protected Areas
Approximately 13% of Pakistan's terrestrial and inland water areas are protected. This includes national parks, wildlife reserves, and other conservation areas aimed at preserving biodiversity and natural habitats.
Land Degradation
Around 29% of Pakistan's land is classified as degraded, affecting agricultural productivity and ecosystem health. This degradation is largely due to overgrazing, deforestation, and poor land management practices.
Mountain Ecosystems
Pakistan's mountain ecosystems are significant for their biodiversity. The Mountain Green Cover Index, which tracks vegetation in mountainous regions, shows a gradual improvement due to reforestation and conservation efforts.
